If you have never done your own web design, start by looking around at websites to find out what you like. This means looking at colors, layout, graphics, fonts and even structure of the website. Look at the overall impression the website gives as well as what parts of the web page your eyes are drawn to. Keep this in mind when designing your own.

The font size and style is one of the most important aspects of your website. If the font in difficult to read or too small it is often not worth the effort for the consumer or reader to bother working through. Keep the font simple and easily read. Good options include Ariel, Verdana, Helvetica and Times New Roman. Avoid fonts that look like handwriting or are full of curls and embellishments.

Colors will either attract the viewer or will cause them to click to another link. Avoid large amounts of bright or intense colors that distract from the overall appearance of the graphics or font. Selective use of bright or intense colors can be used to highlight important information and draw attention, but they need to be minimal on the page.
