Never place too many rules, borders, colors, screened boxes, types of fonts or other elements on your work or page as you will end up with a poor graphic design that looks unprofessional and busy. This is definitely a case where less is better.

A good graphic design tip is to always use colors that contrast for the font and background. Use a light colored background if your font choice is a fairly dark color. A white and black combination is a good choice.

In almost all good graphic designs there is one single element that catches and draws in the viewer's eye so everything else should be secondary and not in competition with this. A few of the many ways you can achieve this is to use one spectacular element of design which draws attention or at the focus point, use a color that strongly contrasts.
